3.1 Introduction
Grammar is seen like a very important component of language teaching by both teachers and students. Traditionally, teaching grammar is expected and required in many English courses around the globe. Most people might think that learning a new language consists a lot on learning its grammar. However, the teaching of grammar has evolved in the past twenty years and its functions and learning objectives have been changing . Still, grammar is seen as part of language learning, but the methods and its role in the language classroom have varied. |
A simple way to define grammar is as a set of rules which govern the way sentences should be constructed in order to be considered accurate. But probably this definition is limited. Grammar can be seen from two perspectives. The first perspective sees grammar as prescriptive, in other words, as a set of rules to which users of a language have to align. Grammar can also be seen as descriptive, in which case, more than rules, the language is analyzed as it happens in its real context and from which some rules are drawn, but keeping in mind that there might be many exceptions to those rules.
